It is best to take a yoga class, as an instructor can help you recognize areas you need to focus on and help you with proper alignment, and can recognize when you are holding a pose incorrectly and help to gently correct you.
If you can’t take a class, then the next best thing is to follow a dvd or online class.
I haven’t found a good beginner dvd that I really like other than some of these kundalini beginner videos:

Another good source for yogi’s of all levels – beginner, intermediate, advanced – is a free website that offers 7 classes per week to choose from, each are 1 hr long.
The instructors are very professional and will keep reminding you to engage your muscles and will help you with focusing on specific muscles and alignment to help you learn how to align your body in poses and movements. I recommend it highly, especially because it is free!

Another decent instructor is at http://www.yogamazing.com
His classes are shorter, about 20 minutes, but you can download them to your ipod if you want to. He is a bit chatty which for me is distracting, so I choose to just go to yogatoday.com, but you should check his classes out (also free) to see if you like him. I lot of people do!

Good luck!
